The Poker Dealer's Practice Companion

EXERCISE: RAKE

The Rake exercise allows you to practice calculating the rake (the rake is the amount the house takes from a pot).

The options for the Rake exercise are:

Determine Rake After Each Betting Round - If this option is checked, you will be asked to supply the correct rake after each round of betting. If this option if off, you will be asked to give the total rake only at the conclusion of the hand.

Determine Rake of Current Bet Only - If this option is checked, you will supply the calculated rake for the current betting round only (not including what is already in the pot). If this option is off, you will supply the total rake up to that point (including what is already in the pot).

Hide Desktop - If this option is on, the desktop of your computer will be covered during game play. This may be helpful if you have a busy desktop.

Background Color - This option determines the color used to cover the desktop if the Hide Desktop option is on. It is also used to determine the background color of the Game Window. To set the color, click the color swatch and select the desired color.

Number of Players - This option determines how many players will be at the table during play. Choosing “Random” will cause DealMaster to randomly select the number of players for each hand. The maximum number of players in 7 Card Stud is 7.

Player Response Time [X] seconds - This option determines how fast the computer player will check, bet or fold.

Table Stakes - This option determines the minimum and maximum bet a player can make.

Ante - The option determines how much the ante is. The ante will be collected from each player before the cards are dealt. In most casino limit games, there is no ante.

Rake [X]% up to [X] - These options determine what percentage of the betting is to be raked and what the maximum rake is. For example, in a $2-$4 Holdem game, you might have a 10% rake up to $4.00. In this case, a $10.00 pot would have a $1.00 rake. A $30.00 put would have a $3.00 rake. And a $50.00 pot would have a $4.00 rake because 10% of $50.00 is more than the “up to” amount of $4.00.

Round rake [up/down] to the nearest [quarter/dollar] - Poker tables in live casinos don't use pennies (or nickels and dimes). Some don't even deal with quarters. These option let you round the required rake to the nearest monetary amount. For example, in a $2-$4 Holdem game with a 10% rake up to $4.00, a $18 pot would have a rake of $1.80. Setting these options to “rake down to the nearest quarter” would make the rake $1.75.
